Due process is in many ways, the glue that holds a just society together. It allows sinful men and women to seek justice without violating the rights of those who have been accused and puts safeguards in place to prevent the abuse of power. And while we tend to think of justice as being a function of the civil government, justice is and should be a part of every aspect of our lives including our familial relationships, our church, work, schools, and associations. But as much as due process is necessary for the continuation of a free society, it also requires that people at all levels of society understand its necessity and that they demand its rules be followed for everyone. When the people, particularly the people of God, forget the necessity of due process, partiality and other forms of injustice increase, and tyranny, the arbitrary enforcement of the law, becomes the norm.
While this episode was recorded two weeks ago, well before the FBI raid on Donald Trump’s Florida estate, there have been many examples of the failure of due process in the United States over the last few years. From election scandals to impeachment hearings, from the disparities in treatment between violent rioters and peaceful protesters before and following the 2020 elections to the recent January 6th hearings, there has been no shortage of cases where our representatives and even our courts have shown great partiality and failure to follow fundamental principles of due process.
In this episode, we discuss what due process is and why it is necessary. We talk about how due process applies to government as well as church and family life and we try to walk through specific examples. Due process is incredibly important and we can see how a lack of understanding about its necessity is harming our churches, our homes, and the entire nation. Please join us as we discuss this very important topic.
