Did George Whitefield Prepare America for 1776? (Ep. 279 Audio)

October 19, 2026

In the generation before the War for American Independence, there was a tremendous movement by God called the Great Awakening in the 1730s and 40s. It was so widespread that most people in the country all heard essentially the same message that you must be born again. Do you understand how that message paved the way for the founding of the United States?
As 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the United States of America, we want to look back at how God shaped the minds of those who helped guide the nation through the American Revolution. When you consider that the late 1700s to the mid-1800s is known as the Age of Revolution and that most events of a similar nature had little long-term success and often brought great suffering to the nation and people involved, we should ask, “What made the American Revolution so different?” Why did God cause America to succeed and to have such influence in the world?
This nature of America’s beginning remains vitally important to understanding its subsequent success. While many of us are familiar with the basic history of our struggle for independence, few understand the events that shaped it. Fewer still understand the spiritual battles that were taking place and how relevant the battles of that time are to the battles we face today. As the people of God, we should understand better than anyone that the spiritual drives the physical. The history we learn is often about the pride of men and the glory of human endeavors. We hope to strip away our pride and see our nation and the way God has used it in the world as God sees it. Please join us as we consider this monumentally important topic.
